You want to hyperlink to you neighbors community so you’ll be able to share internet service, information, and media akin to music and movies. The chances are countless relating to networking routers collectively utilizing wireless.

For the wireless bridge setup I will be using the next ip tackle and subnet setup:

* Wireless Router 1 = Linksys WRT160n 192.168.1.0/24* Wi-fi Router 2 = Linksys WRT54GS-WRT mod 10.0.1.0/24

The Linksys WRT 160n wireless router will be directly linked to the Web service, and the Linksys WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router will create the wireless link between the 2 routers. The best way to setup your wi-fi bridge is to have a computer that has both a wifi connection and a ethernet connection. To start out the installation, use your wireless connection to connect with router 1, which is the Linksys WRT160N. After you’ve connected the router, open your internet browser and type within the default gateway which must be 192.168.1.1. Click on on the Standing Tab and guantee that router 1 has a internet connection.

After you understand that the primary router has a web connection, go to the Wi-fi Security Tab and setup the encryption sort and paraphrase key. Just be sure you are using appropriate encryption between each of the routers.linksys-wrt160n-wpa-wi-fi-safety

After you have set the encryption sort and key on the first router, disconnect from this router. Now connect to the WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router, then go to the setup tab and alter the native network to or whatever network vary you prefer.

* Local Ip Address: 10.0.1.1* Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0* Gateway: 10.0.1.1* Local Dns: 10.0.1.1

After you have modified the community setup in your modded DD-WRT router, disconnect from the router then reconnect to so that you obtain your new ip address. Your new ip handle ought to be somewhere within the 10.0.1.0 network. Now open an online browser at point it in direction of 10.0.1.1, which is now the default gateway for your WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router.

Now go to the status tab and click on on the wireless tab. Within the wireless tab it’s best to see a button that says website survey. The site survey button is located towards the underside of the page. All you need to do now could be select router 1 from the listing, which needs to be the Linksys WRT160N.

After you have got selected router 1 from the record, go to the wireless tab and click on on the wi-fi safety tab. All you have to do now’s input the exact same encryption sort and key that you just setup for router 1. After you will have set the encryption kind and key into ybur modded DD-WRT router, all you have to do is apply the settings. You need to now have a wireless hyperlink between the Linksys WRT160N and the Linksys WRT54GS. Voip – What Is It And Why Do I Need It?

In the dynamically changing world of technology, VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is one of the latest and potentially greatest wonders ever created by the human mind. Watch a techie show, read a techie magazine or talk to any cyber dude and most will acknowledge that VoIP is one of the coolest advancements they’ve ever been blessed to experience.

On the other hand, for the vast majority who are not techie-nerds and who are looking for a non-techie to English translation of what VoIP has done to induce such high praises, then sit back, relax and read a bit more. In a nutshell, VoIP allows you to make phone calls over the internet, using your computer, to pretty much anywhere on the planet. The VoIP acronym is simply a fancy, smancy technical term for what could just as easily be called an Internet phone.

The miracle of VoIP can be explained in a simple process. The analog voice signals, which are the technical term for the exchange of hot air you have with friends and family while talking for hours on the phone… Sorry, I couldn’t resist a bit of humor as I drifted back to days gone by and my youth. Ok, back to business.

VoIP converts the analog voice signals into digital data packets, which allows those packets of data to be transferred via cable lines (the internet) and then they are reconverted into analog voice signals at the other end so that once again, you can understand what is being said. Thanks to internet protocol, VoIP supports real time and two way transmission of conversations.

Sounds Good But How Do I Get Started With VoIP?
First, you have to know what type of internet service you have from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). The reason you need to know the type of service you have is because currently, VoIP works best with a cable or DSL internet connection because they are faster? as in they can download more bits of information (data packets) per second and this allows better sound quality on your internet calls.

Although VoIP services are available for other types of ISP connections like dial up, prepaid and satellite… the technology with VoIP has yet to progress to the point where you will consistently experience crystal clear sound over slower internet connections. However, if you currently live in an area that hasn’t been wired for broadband, you shouldn’t have to wait too long for the technology to progress to where you can enjoy a quality conversation over a slower internet type connection. However, for the time-being, quality is still a bit patchy without a high speed connection.

How Much is This Internet Telephony, VoIP Thingy Going to Cost Me?
Cost is one of best things about VoIP because VoIP services cost less than residential phone service and much, much less than most monthly cell phone plans. And if your DSL or broadband internet company just happens to be one of companies that currently offers VoIP services, then so much the better because that usually translates into even lower rates than if you used an independent or outside company for your VoIP phone service.

How Reliable Is VoIP?
Because transmission is being done over the Internet, the voice quality is largely dependent on your internet connection speed. And? at this moment in time, regardless of your ISP or connection speed the voice quality still hasn’t reached that of normal land based or mobile phones. Plus, although rare, if your internet connection goes down you wouldn’t be able to make or receive phone calls and VoIP is still more vulnerable to dropped calls due to a lack of signal strength.

Although VoIP still has a few drawbacks, once you try it you’ll quickly realize that they aren’t the type of problems that will stop you from wanting to use it? especially when you get your bill each month because with VoIP the savings can be dramatic if you spend a bunch of time on the phone.

How Secure Is VoIP?
Because transmission is in an environment where the dreaded “hacker” reigns supreme this concern is an obvious and legitimate one. Let’s face it… although not perfectly secure it’s no less secure than sending emails and billions and billions of those are sent each day. And frankly, if you’re concerned about others listening in on your phone calls you should toss your cell phone because picking up those signals by the “unscrupulous” is much easier than sabotaging your VoIP phone calls.

If you are overly concerned with security due to the fact that VoIP is a relatively a new technology and that there still exists; although remote, a possibility that those cyber technicians will hijack your calls then you’ll just have to wait until you feel these issues are solved before you give VoIP a test drive.

Can You Keep Your Number?
Yes and No! In most instances you will be able to keep your current phone number but just to be safe you should ask this question before signing up for VoIP service. And frankly, in some cases you may be required to change numbers. Oh well? nothings perfect.

How to Connect a Wireless Router

When connecting a Wireless Router to the Internet and to provide a WLAN (Wireless Local Network) for local connectivity, it is important that you firstly have a working Broadband DSL connection to the Internet via a DSL modem. A lot of non-technical people get confused about the difference between a wireless router and an Internet Gateway Router, which has a built-in modem and so does not need a standalone DSL modem.

Let us assume you already have a DSL Modem and you have tested connectivity to the Internet through the modem with a PC. Now we need to connect the wireless router to the DSL Modem and also set up the local Wireless LAN to enable local devices to connect wirelessly with the device. If you have a cable modem, because your broadband service from your Internet Service Provider is a cable service then the setup is very similar, having already tested the functionality of the Cable Modem. In order to connect to the wireless router, your PCs, Notebooks or even Gaming Consoles need to support the IEEE 802.11 wireless standards. In other words they must have a wireless NIC card either built-in to the Motherboard or you will need to purchase a wireless adapter, the most common being USB Wireless Adapters which are largely Plug and Play.

Another important thing to remember when purchasing your wireless router, is to make sure it is not a wireless access point, otherwise it will not have the routing function which essential to connect your wireless devices to the Internet.

We are almost ready to start connecting our wireless device, so it would be a good idea to have a copy of any setup instructions that came with the device. They will be very similar, regardless of the manufacturer, but there will be subtle differences.

Switch off or unplug your existing DSL Modem or Cable Modem. If it is a DSL Modem then it will be connected to a telephone point with a supplied telephone cable, usually via an ADSL filter. Next take the network cable supplied with your wireless router and plug one end into the RJ-45 receptacle on the DSL Modem (there will usually only be one). Connect the other end of the cable into the WAN port on your wireless router. Most wireless routers also have 4 ports to enable you to connect 4 separate PCs via cables. The WAN port is normally distinct from the computer ports my means of colour coding or due to the fact that it is separate from the other 4 ports.

The next step is to plug in and switch on the DSL Modem and wait few minutes to enable it to boot and then synchronise with the Service Provider network via the telephone cable. Your DSL Modem will normally have a visible LED indicating a successful connection to the Internet.

Now switch on your wireless routing device that you previously connected to the DSL Modem, and shortly a green LED will normally indicate successful connection to your Modem. We are now almost ready to start configuring the Wireless Router itself.

Use a network patch cable to connect a working PC to one of the usually 4 network ports on the wireless device. A built in DHCP Server in the wireless router should allocate an appropriate IP Address to the PC being used for configuration. Open up a browser window on your PC and type in the URL provided by the manufacturer in the address bar. For example Linksys routers normally use the URL http://192.168.1.1 . Success should result in the router default configuration page becoming visible in your browser window. Your router instructions should give you the default username and password required to access the main wireless router configuration. This will often be admin and admin, or whatever your router instructions informs you. Once you have successfully entered the Username and Password, then navigate to the section that allows you to change the settings and configure an admin Username and Password that you can remember. Save the settings!!

You should now be able to test the connection to the Internet by disconnecting the cable and connecting to the wireless network by using your PC wireless connection. Bring up a browser window and try connecting to a favourite website, maybe a search engine like Google. If successful then the final step is to secure your wireless network by configuring wireless security settings, normally WPA or WPA2.

Either via your wireless connection or by reconnecting the cable between the PC and the wireless router, navigate back to the wireless router’s default configuration page and find the wireless security settings section. You will be required to configure the SSID of the wireless router. Your router will have a default SSID, but you should change it to a name that you remember. When you or your family are trying to connect a PC to the wireless router in the future, this name will ensure they attempt to connect to the correct wireless network instead of a neighbours network. Now select WPA or WPA2 settings from the configuration (WPA2 is more secure, if available). Configure a unique pass phrase that you can remember and the wireless router will use this pass phrase to generate a secure network key that is used to authenticate devices and to encrypt data passing over the wireless network. Remember to save this configuration again.

You will now need to reconnect your wireless enabled PC to the wireless network and you will be asked for the same pass phrase when your PC attempts to connect to the wireless network with the SSID you configured earlier.

If no mistakes have been made then you should now be able to connect to the Internet from the wireless enabled PC. Any other PCs that require wireless access just need to be configured with the correct SSID and pass phrase and connectivity should be quick and efficient. Good Luck.

Introduction to Wi Fi Technology And Its Advantages

Today one of the most discussed technology terms is “Wi-Fi”. People like to associate Wi-Fi with internet that is working in a wireless network. But the technology is offering more than just browsing the Internet. I have to say that Wi-Fi technology enables us to use Internet wherever we are. If we are in the office, cafeteria, cinema hall or in an airport, we can use Internet without any interruption.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is technically a trademarked brand name for the wireless standard owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data. Like television connection from providers like Charter Cable, communication across a wireless network is a two-way radio communication. With no physical connection between sender and receiver, Wi-Fi technology works on a frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave propagation. Some fifteen years before we didn’t even thought about the possibility of listening music or downloading music when we are travelling. Wi-Fi has made it possible for us to do whatever we want to do with Internet.

The applications supported by Wi-Fi include video game consoles, home networks, mobile phones, certain operating systems and other consumer electronics. That means, if you have a Wi-Fi connection, you can wirelessly download photos, music, videos from your computer to your compatible television. You can also access data from blue-ray player and certain other devices. Isn’t it sounds interesting?

With the introduction of Wi-Fi enabled devices, wired devices are becoming an old story. Nowadays people are more interested in buying Wi-Fi enabled devices. Some of the advantages of Wi-Fi are –

Improved mobility and flexibility – The technology provides you more flexibility in using your electronic devices. Now you don’t have to worry about the four to five cords that interconnect your devices together. WiFi can connect all the electronic devices, which is the next higher level of connectivity, without sacrificing design options. By having a WiFi connection to products like network music player, you can hear music wherever you are in the house. The only thing you have to do is to connect your music player with speakers located at different locations. There are options to change the music while you are in one room and the music system is in the other room.

Easy to setup connection – Though the term “Wi Fi” sounds really technical, it is not difficult to set up a wireless connection. It’s a pretty straightforward process. As you don’t have to drill any hole to run the wires, it’s much easy to install the connection. Most of the routers available with Wi-Fi are ‘plug and play’ connection. By just connecting to a power outlet or Ethernet cord, your Wi-Fi network is ready to use. Now you can connect your electronic devices to the wireless connectivity and enjoy the service.

Fast data transfer rates – The fastest commercially available Wi-Fi protocol in today’s market is 802.11. It can give a transfer speed of nearly 150 megabits. Along with this lighting speed, it can deliver streaming high-definition TV signals and CD quality audio. When certain Internet-ready devices can give you specific information like weather, sports or news, certain high end smart televisions and several other blue-ray players give you a fully functioning web browser almost similar to the ones you will find on computers.

Some of the disadvantages of the Wi-Fi connection can be security concerns and interference with other devices. If you are a person who is not that much worried about these disadvantages, then you can think about Wi-Fi as a modern alternative to networks that use cables. Wi-Fi can improve the usefulness of home computers and office computers. Think and plan about a Wi-Fi connection.

A First Timers Guide to Mobile Broadband

If you aren’t particularly tech savvy, the term “mobile broadband” may not mean much to you. However, it is likely that you have had at least some experience with it. When you purchase a computer or modern smartphone, there is usually a Wi-Fi card built into the unit. This allows you to surf the Internet wirelessly from the device and is in fact, how most people use the Internet these days. However, another method of accessing the Internet is via the aforementioned mobile broadband, which is simply a marketing term created by wireless carriers because they didn’t want to use the simple words “Internet Access.” Mobile broadband was first launched in 2002, with a standard for all GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) put in place in 2008.

You may notice that you can access the Internet on your smartphone without even having the Wi-Fi enabled on the device. This is because your phone has a broadband plan that allows you to surf the Internet. All mobile carriers have their own broadband plan. You can find out the specific coverage areas by contacting your local carriers.

As for computers, the principal is the same. You may have noticed that if you don’t have a wireless router set up in your home, accessing the Internet can be a hassle. Maybe you cruise from cafe to cafe, searching for a location that offers that attractive “free Wi-Fi” advertisement. It’s also likely you spend time searching wireless accounts around your home neighbourhood, hoping to find one that isn’t password protected. The good news is that mobile broadband isn’t just for phones. You can purchase a mobile broadband card from a specific carrier which plugs directly into the USB or modem port on your computer. Once plugged in, there is no hassling with a router or encryptions: you are ready to surf the net.

Convenience and quick access to the Internet are major selling points to mobile broadband. However, like any service, there are drawbacks as well. Because there are so many mobile broadband carriers, the quality can vary from company to company. Some carriers may have more limited service areas than others, and some might have hardly any viable service areas at all. You’re obviously going to want a broadband plan that offers extensive coverage. The price for broadband plans and cards will also vary from carrier to carrier, so it’s important to find out as much information as possible before you sign up or buy that card. Mobile carriers offer various broadband plans. Whether you are extremely budget conscious, or you have the means to splurge on an extended plan, your mobile carrier should have a plan that fits your needs and budget.

All in all, mobile broadband is an ideal choice over the standard wireless because it eliminates a lot of the hassle, such as a router and user account setup. As this service is so quick and user-friendly, this helps makes it ideal for the less technologically inclined out there. All you need to do is purchase a card or plan and you will be surfing the Internet in no time.

Evil Twins And WiFi Hotspots

Public WiFi hotspots are available all around us. We use them because they are convenient. However, nearly all WiFi hotspots are completely unprotected , and are easy targets for hackers looking to steal your sensitive information.

Evil twins appear to be normal public WiFi hotspots, but they are actually set up by hackers to steal your information. When you inadvertently access an evil twin, the hacker who designed it can steal all the data you send over the Internet, including your password, financial data, and other personal information. Evil twins can even impersonate well-known websites when you access the Internet, in order to steal your login information.

If you accidentally connect to an evil twin, you may be subject to a Man-in-the-Middle attack, which occurs when a hacker eavesdrops on your Internet connection and intercepts any data coming into or out of your computer. You may be a victim of a Man-in-the-Middle attack if a formerly secure website (one that uses https) no longer is secure, you receive a warning message that the website’s certificate is no longer valid, or if the website looks and behaves differently. Below are some things you can do to stay safe from evil twins:
